OOTD: Burn Away (Remix)

Skirt: ASOS Curve
Tights: Forever 21+
Shoes: Crocs

In my last OOTD post, I mentioned that I had a work meeting to attend and would be changing my outfit before heading over to that. This is the outfit I changed into. It's pretty much just a remix of this OOTD from earlier this month, but hey, it was a great outfit and I wanted to rock it out again.

I've mentioned it before here on the blog, but when I'm not busy being a stay at home dad and homemaker, I am a makeup artist. For me, that mostly just relates to working at a haunted attraction during September and October. One of the perks of being a makeup artist is that we are not beholden to the same dress code rules as many other employees, because most of us have awesome dyed hair, piercings, tattoos, and all that fun. I'm digressing a bit here; what I wanted to say is that I decided to change the skirt up for this remix to something a bit longer and more work appropriate. I also knew I'd have to be doing a lot of running around and such, so I swapped the heels for some comfortable yet still awesome flats.

It's totally a good thing that I swapped shoes, as well, because it wound up pouring rain and I actually stepped in several potholes in the backstage area. These shoes were actually awesome for that, because while my foot slipped out of the shoe in a totally strange way both times that I did it, it managed to keep me from turning my ankle or otherwise wiping out. Whew! Unfortunately, the tights did not survive the experience, as I managed to wear giant holes in the heels of both legs. Drats! Thankfully, however, I picked up another pair the last time I ordered from Forever 21, haha.

Speaking of shopping, I actually bought four pairs of this skirt, as they were on clearance and I figured they would be perfect for work. Again, as a makeup artist, it isn't uncommon for me to get paint on my clothes, so it's important to me to not wear my super nice clothing while working, but that doesn't mean I don't want to look stylish. While I'm not likely to do a work outfit OOTD, I'll just tell you here that my work outfit for this year will pretty much consist of this skirt, many different pairs of tights, and these shoes, with a work provided t-shirt.

I had a good time at the meeting. There have been a lot of positive changes at my place of employment over the year, and I'm really pleased with the general direction our department has taken. I received a lot of compliments on this outfit from my coworkers, though I did have one funny experience I want to share here. I was walking backstage with a friend while heading to the meeting. There's always a lot of activity backstage, as I work for a major theme park, and while many of my fellow makeup department coworkers have been cool and supportive of me, that same sentiment doesn't often extend to the myriad other departments on property. Anyways, as we were heading over to the meeting, there was a tech services guy driving a golf cart past us. As he drove up to us, I noticed him give me a very rude look and saw him mouth the words, "What the fuck?" and then I heard him say (rather loudly), "That's fucked up!" He actually stopped as he passed us and just glared at me, very obviously. It's not something I'm unused to, and I gave exactly zero fucks, but my friend turned to me and was like, "What just happened?" I laughed and said, "Yeah, welcome to walking next to a boy in a dress." She gave me a quizzical yet sympathetic look and replied, "Yeah, I wasn't sure that's what that was. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt that he wasn't being a jerk but ... wow."

Anyhow, this is getting pretty long for just an OOTD post, so if you've stuck around and read this far .. thanks! I hope you found my commentary entertaining, and don't be afraid to chime in down in the comments below. I'd love to hear from you! I'll be back very soon with more updates ... so keep rockin'!

OOTD: Romp

Romper: Forever 21+
Tights: ASOS Curve
Shoes: Payless

I've wanted to give a romper a shot for a while now. On paper, it seemed to me like it would combine the ease and comfort of a dress with the ...practicality of a pair of shorts. When I saw this romper, it reminded me of the first dress I ever bought (featured here) due to the moto-inspired style, so it seemed like a great romper to have a go with. What do I think?

I'm not entirely sold, honestly. I was correct about ease of wear and comfort, however the one thing I did not factor was ease of bathroom access. It's not exactly a deal breaker but ... holy impracticality Batman! Ah, well. Anyhow, I'm reasonably happy with how this outfit turned out, and even though I won't be wearing this one all day (I've got a work meeting to attend this evening and I don't feel it's wholly appropriate), I'm pretty happy with it. Let me know what you think in the comments below!

OOTD: Burn Away

Skirt: ASOS Curve
Belt (worn as bracelet): Forever 21+
Tights: Pretty Polly
Shoes: Madden Girl

Yesterday, Mrs. Spookshow & I took Bridget down to visit her grandparents as well as meet the extended family, and this is what I wore. I picked up this top last week from Forever 21+, and it's awesome! I was kinda rushed out the door in the morning, so I decided to take my OOTD photos down at my parents house, which turned out to be a pretty great location, eh?

I've been feeling pretty depressed and emotionally drained recently, though I'm not sure why. As such, I really wasn't feeling up to dealing with a lot of the bullshit I was likely to receive from the extended family over my attire, and suffice to say I didn't really have a very good day. I don't really want to get into it here on the blog, but I do feel it's important to point out that I was indeed the recipient of some verbal abuse and otherwise shitty actions. Though I'm usually pretty fortunate with regards to trolling / abuse from my sartorial decisions, sometimes I get to experience the less good side of it all, and it can be hard to deal with. I'll be okay, though; I just need some time to regenerate my shields, so to speak.

Anyhow, I do think this outfit is pretty fabulous, so there's that at least, haha.

OOTD: Animate

Belt: Torrid
Skirt: Simply Be
Tights: ?
Shoes: Target

When I'm playing video games on my PC, I really like the colors to be bright and vivid, so my picture settings on the television I use as a monitor are jacked towards that end. As a result, sometimes when I order things online the color of the item is totally different in real life as opposed to what I saw on my screen when I ordered it. This skirt is a prime example of that.

I really wasn't expecting this tone of blue when I ordered this skirt, and it's proven to be kinda difficult to incorporate with the other items in my closet. I've actually tried to figure out what to wear with it several times over the past while, but it wasn't until today that it finally clicked. I feel like this outfit really channels some animated cartoon character whimsy, but that's feelin' pretty spot on today, so hey!

The polka dot top is really fun. I especially love the back detail. I'd actually been opposed to tops and dresses that show off my back until recently, but now that we are in the middle of summer here, I'm certainly enjoying it, haha. I figured the red heels would really pop here, and while I would have liked to add a red necklace or bracelet with this outfit just to help tie them in a bit, I didn't have anything in the right tone. Ah, well, I think it still works. Of course, I just had to add in this awesome cat ear bowler hat from Domino Dollhouse, because, well ... awesome! Haha. Also, polka dot tights for the win!

Thanks for reading!

OOTD: Aurora

Headband: Domino Dollhouse
Skirt: ASOS Curve
Shoes: Wanted

Looks like it's back to back galaxy print here on the blog, this time in a sheer top! Living in Florida, I'm kind of a sucker for sheer tops, if only because they are usually pretty light and airy, which is always a plus here. Truthfully, it's just too damn hot for well over half of the year, so I tend to have to just deal with it and sweat no matter what I'm wearing anyways, but hey, it's something at least right? My theory recently as been to just try to look fabulous all the time, because I'm going to melt while outside no matter what, haha. It's working out, though.

The skater skirt and shoes have been done a few times here on the blog, so really this one is all about the top and headband. I ordered this headband at the same time as that awesome skull print dress, mostly because I though it looked cool and I've been wanting to experiment with more styles on my noggin'. I wasn't sure how it would look without much hair, but I think it's actually pretty cool in a hard femme kinda way, you know? Bonus points, as always, for spiked studs, haha.

As I said in my last OOTD, galaxy print has been everywhere recently, so it was only a matter of time before I rocked it. I like this one because it's completely different from the other galaxy print garment I have, while still being really cool. I've always thought that sheer tops are a lot of fun, and I've even worn a few in the past here on the blog, but this time I'm doing a little bit different. The combo of bra + sheer top is really fun, as I love that little peak of belly you get with it. I think it's a pretty bold look, especially for a fatshionista, and is a direct statement of body acceptance and positivity if there ever was one. I didn't think it was a look that I would ever do, though, being a boy in a dress, because, well, the bra ...

However, Mrs. Spookshow had gotten some new sports bras about a month ago, and since we are the same size I decided to try one on. I was really shocked at how it actually made my chest look a lot better, and actually resolved some fit issues I was having with a few of my tops. I've talked about it here on the blog before, but I've always been a bit ... endowed ... in the boob area, mostly because I'm a plus size dood. It's been probably the most difficult area of my body to accept, but recently I've managed to make some really great progress in that regard.

Despite the nature of this blog, I was a little apprehensive initially about wearing a sports bra. The benefits of doing so, however, have outweighed that initial doubt, so here we are today. I purchased a few sports bras of my own, and have been wearing them when applicable for about a month now. I've made so many positive strides in terms of self-love and confidence recently, which has been an amazing experience.

And here I am now, rockin' this look and lovin' it.

His Black Dress Branding Update

I'm sure you've no doubt noticed the visual changes here on the blog, but I just wanted to make a quick post confirming them. I'd been considering updating the color palette and logo here to better reflect my current sartorial outlook, and, well, that's happened finally. I hope you like the new look of His Black Dress! Thanks for reading the blog, and let me know what you think in the comments below!

OOTD: Nebula

Necklace: Domino Dollhouse
Dress: Modcloth
Bracelet: Domino Dollhouse
Tights: Levante
Shoes: Target

Galaxy print has been everywhere recently, but leave it to Modcloth to finally get it on me, haha. I got really excited when I saw this dress on the website, and immediately snatched it up. It does not disappoint. It's really short on me, but honestly I kinda love that and it just makes me want to twirl. And twirl I did, y'all ...

So, I snapped the twirling photos on my iphone so that I could immediately post them without having to wait to get home, which I now kinda regret because the quality could have been better if I used my good camera and tripod. Oh, well, it's still super fun anyways.

I wore this outfit out on Saturday evening when Mrs. Spookshow, a close friend, and myself went out to dinner while we were in Daytona. It was a lot of fun, and I felt great in this dress despite getting rained on. There's just something about having legs for days goin' on that ensures a great time, haha.

I had a fun little experience as I was taking the hallway photos in this dress at the condo we were staying at. As I was getting my camera timer all set up and such, I turned around to find a teenage girl standing by behind me. She smiled and asked, "Taking photos?" in a way that indicated she didn't want to just walk into frame and photobomb it, and I smiled and replied back, "Yep, but thanks and go ahead." She nodded, but before continuing on looked me up and down and said, "I really like your dress." After thanking her for the compliment she smiled again and continued on to her room. It was a nice little exchange, anyways, as it's always good to be met with positive comments while out and about. That's not typically the response people expect a man in a dress to get, but I've received a lot  more compliments than I have negative attention, actually. Yay for that!

OOTD: At the Beach

Sunglasses: Domino Dollhouse
Swimsuit: Modcloth
Shoes: Crocs

Over the weekend I went to Daytona Beach with Mrs. Spookshow & Bridget. I've been pretty excited about this trip since I got this swimsuit, because I knew it would be fun to finally get to rock this one out on the beach. Finally breaking down my mental barriers and seizing the confidence to wear a beautiful suit like this one out has been a very liberating and meaningful life experience for me, and Mrs. Spookshow certainly appreciates my new found love for the water, haha.

I had a lot of fun taking these photos on the beach, and we spent the rest of the early afternoon just relaxing and enjoying ourselves. A close friend of ours was able to come up and visit us, so getting to hang out with her on the beach and socialize was super fun. I'm sure a lot of readers here would like to know more about how my experience was on the beach as a man in a swimsuit traditionally marketed to women, and the answer there is that it was surprisingly (and thankfully) uneventful. There were, of course, a lot of craning necks and surprised stares, and more than a few camera phones from up on the dock, but nothing disruptive or negative was directed at me. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but also decided that I really just couldn't care or worry about that, but it was really great to just have it be a pretty much non-event. That's really the ideal here, you know?

Anyhow, it's so cool to finally have some beach photos in this suit! I'm really happy about that, and hope y'all like them. I'm gonna close this post out with a few photos of Bridget and myself, just for fun, to give a glimpse of our Spookshow beach vacation!

OOTD: Violet Hearts

Sunglasses: Domino Dollhouse
Necklace: Spookhaus Plus
Shoes: Target

The dress! When I saw the promo photo for this dress (featuring the lovely Tess Munster) I knew I just had to have it. It was totally worth it, as it's incredibly awesome! I've not had a babydoll dress nor a nylon spandex dress before, so I was really surprised by the comfort of it. The awesome necklace was made by Mrs. Spookshow last week, and turned out super cool, eh? We're lookin' into making a few more of these to put up for sale over at Spookhaus+, so be sure to keep an eye out for that if you are interested.

Mrs. Spookshow, our baby BAM, and myself are heading over to the beach for the weekend, so it seemed like a perfect time to rock this one out! I've got several difference outfits picked out for the trip, and there will be more pictures of my awesome swimsuit on the beach, so expect lots more updates on the blog very soon!
