07/17/12 OOTD: Slash

In the last OOTD (which, yes, I know was too long ago) I talked about my struggles with fashion in the summer here in Florida. Since that time, I've managed to put together a few outfits that I feel work well and are comfortable enough for the hot days here, but most of the looks just haven't felt special enough to warrant posting an OOTD here. I think I've got a pretty good one here, though.

While I've got your attention, however, there's something I'd like to announce officially here on the blog. A lot has been going on recently in my life, but the most notable bit of Spookshow related news is .... we're having a baby!

I'll give you a moment for that one, ha.

Seriously though, Mrs. Spookshow is pregnant. Thirteen weeks pregnant, to be exact. This was by design and we are very excited. On one hand, it's really strange to be venturing into this next phase of life, but I'm looking forward to it. Dads in dresses ... yeah that's probably gonna be a new post here eventually, ha.

Anyhow, with that out of the way, let's get to the OOTD, hmm?

Sunglasses: Domino Dollhouse
Necklace: Domino Dollhouse
Jacket: Domino Dollhouse (pictured later)
Top: Ashley Stewart
Leggings: Mrs. Spookshow's drawer, ha
Shoes: Madden Girl

I normally like to lead with a more "plain" pose, but I liked this picture too much not to just wade in with it. Your eyes do not deceive you, I'm rockin' some orange hairs!

With regards to the hair, it started when I got lazy for a week or so and didn't shave. I remarked to Mrs. Spookshow that it would be cool to have a mohawk, and that I missed having hair to dye all sorts of colors. She replied, "Or you could grow a lesbian." Before you get offended, let me explain. We both really loved Kara Laricks from Fashion Star, both her designs and her personal look. Mrs. Spookshow had said when we watched it that she wished she could cut her hair like that, but everyone would think she is a lesbian. Thus, it became named "the lesbian" haircut. Anyhow, if Mrs. Spookshow won't rock it, I certainly will. We cut and dyed it yesterday, and I decided to start with napalm orange haircolor, as I felt orange would actually be either complimentary or contrasting with the colors I tend to wear (black, red, purple, blue). We shall see.

On that note (I promise we'll get back to the OOTD soon, guys), Mrs. Spookshow often jokes that I must be a lesbian in a man's body. Now, I've actually heard a lot of dudes claim that, but I think I've got a bit more cred than they do in this department, ha. I prefer to think of myself as just a straight guy who doesn't give a damn what people think of him, but hey. The reason I've digressed here, anyways, is because I've been following Fuck Yeah, Hard Femme! on Tumblr, and I feel it's really influenced this outfit. Am I hard femme? Yeah, I think so.

This top, despite having an awesome print, is really outside of my usual comfort zone. Specifically, I can't remember the last time I ever wore anything sleeveless. I'm sure a lot of the plus size readers here can relate; it's just not a part of my body I've ever been comfortable with. I believe I also mentioned in my last OOTD, though, that I'm very much a proponent of body acceptance, so I figured it was time to stop covering up my arms just because they are fat...

... which led to me deciding to have some fun here, ha! As I look at these pictures, I'm honestly not too sure what I was so caught up about. Yep, I'm not exactly packing guns, but my arms are still fat in sleeves, so whatever. Sadly, I wish I had some awesome tattoos to be showing off here, but it's just something I haven't gotten into (yet?).

Oh man, this is turning into a super long post. If you've stuck around this long, I applaud you. Lately I have wanted to try to capture more angles (even the less flattering ones) in the interest of promoting body acceptance along with fashion freedom. With that in mind, here's a totally sweet shot of my backside. Sorry ladies, I am taken, ha!

Totally crappy weather forced me to take these pictures inside for better lighting, which is unfortunate but it's better than trying to photograph black clothing on a dreary day. I think it led me to want to have some fun with poses. This is my Graham Elliot (from MasterChef) pose, ha! Incidentally, if you are here reading this because you were googling Graham Elliot, hello! Probably not what you were expecting, but I hope you'll have a look around anyways.

I know it's summer and all, but I really thought this jacket would look amazing with this outfit. I'll definitely be rockin' the hell out of this once the weather here starts to cool down.

Someone requested that I show off my shoes with each OOTD, and while I'm sure I've posted pictures of these before, here you go!

Wow, okay apologies for this one being so long. I'll just say I'm really diggin' this outfit, and I think I may have found a summer style that I feel good about. Keep on rockin', folks!

  1. Congratulations on the baby news! That's awesome. :)

Also, your new hair is awesome. I love the colour. One of my fave things is trying a new hair colour every few months.

Love the outfit. I like seeing how other plus size people do summer, especially as I also tend to wear a lot of black and layers, so summer can be tricky. The sleeveless top rocks as do the shoes.

    1. Thank you, Sian! I also like black and layers, so yeah summer here is not my best sartorial time for sure, ha! I appreciate the compliment!

  2. Congrats on the upcoming baby! That's exciting!

And rockin' outfit, very hard femme! I'm really digging the necklace particularly. Btw, your arms look good! You rock the sleeveless look.

    1. Thank you, Eve!

Haha, yes I love this necklace, but I do sometimes have trouble figuring out what to pair it with. I think it worked well here. I appreciate the compliments!

  3. Mark from Brisbane AustraliaJuly 18, 2012

I like the black tights you're wearing, they would go well with other skirts and dresses, I hope all goes well for you two and I hope all goes well with the new arival in your family, it doesn't matter if the baby is a boy or a girl, so long as he/she grows up healthy, I have my fingers crossed for you two, I'm sure you will teach your child to be acepting and understanding to all people from all walks of life, because if wa had more people like you in this world, there would be less problems on this planet, men would be able to go out and wear a skirt or a dress without fear or without being told what he can and cannot wear in public.

    1. Thanks, Mark. I imagine our kid will at least be unique, ha! It will certainly be an interesting experience for us, that's for sure. Thank you for the well wishes!

  4. Congrats on the baby news! How very exciting. Looking forward to some "Dad chic" outfits in the future;-)

Loving the new orange hairdo. It really pops.

  5. Just wanted to say I totally love you. You have an amazing sense of style and you look fantastic in all the photos you post! xo

    1. Thanks, Mave! I appreciate the compliments very much! <3

  6. Congratulations to both of you! You KNOW I'm cosigned on the hair because it rules (my hair is Napalm Orange on my driver's license), and the "hard femme" designation suits you to a T. I'm sweating a little just THINKING about wearing leggings right now, but you rock it.

    1. Thank you, Mia! Haha, yeah I gotta say I'm loving the hair as well. I thought it would be pretty fun, but thought it might take a bit of getting used to, but honestly it was pretty much love at first fright. Thanks for the compliments, as always!

  7. red hair and stripy black and white top - looks like a head shot on a zebra! It's fatal blow!
